The Sound of Music Live! was a live television production telecast by NBC on December 5, 2013. Based on Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s original 1959 Broadway play and not on the more well-known 1965 film version (with an exception that the telecast used the song “Something Good,” which originated in the 1965 film — while omitting “An Ordinary Couple,” a song from the 1959 original with a similar function), the program starred country singer Carrie Underwood as Maria von Trapp. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron served as producers.
The production was met with mixed reviews; much of its criticism was directed towards the acting performance of Carrie Underwood as Maria, as critics felt Underwood did not have enough experience in acting to adequately portray Maria. By contrast, her vocal performances were universally praised as a testament to her strengths as a musician and the production was a ratings success.
